Video Stabilizer Software.

Postby Gerlinde » Mon Mar 04, 2013 11:52 am

I'm in the market for a good video stabilizer. For most things, the build-in software that comes with Adobe PRE, Magix MEP13 and Pinnacle Studio 16 is sufficient. But I had a couple of projects where I wished, I had a more powerful stabilizer.

I looked at NewBlue's stabilizer and I also tried Mercalli 2. I was not too impressed with NewBlue, maybe I did not use it right. Mercalli worked pretty good, but is also very expensive.

Yesterday, I found Muvee Turbo Video Stabilizer.
I used it on some very shaky footage from a GoPro camera and I was really impressed with the result. The interface is very simple, all you have to do is drop your clip in and click the button to start the Stabilizer. You can stabilize the whole clip or mark only a section of your clip for stabilizing. It gives you a side-by-side preview of the original and stabilized video. Export of the new clip is also very simple, it uses the same codec of the original footage and puts it in a folder created in the Video Library.

The best part of all, the software costs only $19.99 :-D and it worked way faster than Mercalli.

I just discovered what the major limitation of this software is. It works only with *.mp4 or *.m4v files. :(
But I think it is still a good tool to have in the tool box, especially for action camera footage.

Thank you for posting this. I tried it on a few videos and the results were really good.

If you have .MOV files made of avc/h264 video stream, you can try adding .MP4 to the end of the file name. It worked for me, and I have lots of clips like that.

Thanks for the tip renaming H264.mov files to .mp4. That works great with ipad video.

I have a lot of MOV files from Kodak PlaySport and Kodak Zi8. Some really wobbly video is coming out better than my attempts with Mercalli.

It would be wonderful if this software had batch processing.

I've come across a problem with frame rates that are 29.97 or 59.94. Muvee truncates to 29 or 59, which causes the video to be out of sync with the audio. You would have to timestretch the video to match the audio in whatever video editing software you use to edit the stabilized video.

I wonder if the GoPro uses those framerates, or do they use just 30 and 60?

I looked at the GoPro clips with GSpot and it seems they also have a frame rate of 29.971. After they were processed, the program saves them at a frame rate of 29.029. I did not notice any audio problems, none of my clips have any dialogs or anything that would indicate that the sound is out of sync. I wonder why they use such a strange frame rate?
I will check my iPad clips and Kodak Playsport footage and see if I can find anything.

I've been getting close to matching results of Muvee Turbo Stabilizer with Prodad Mercalli's. Now I know why. Muvee is using a Prodad Mercalli 2.0 DLL. Ha! Muvee is also using Mainconcept's (now owned by DivX company) coders.

Have you been able to overcome the frame rate issues?

Which Mercalli are you using, the SAL or Pro version? I find both very expensive. Is there any advantage using the Pro version besides the obvious stand alone versus plugin?
Does the plugin have more presets?

No, I haven't overcome the frame rate issue. I found that it's better to lengthen the audio instead of the video. It's quicker to render. When I bought the Mercalli plug-in, the standalone came with it. They both have the same number of presets. The plug-in does not have the dashboard. The plug-in analyzes faster than the standalone, and is more convenient. You don't have to render to a new file right away , your analysis is saved when you save your NLE project. With the standalone you have to render to a file or else you lose your work (analysis). I rarely use the standalone.

With the Muvee Turbo Stabilizer there is no guesswork. Muvee will probably fix the frame-rate issue if enough people complain.

Robert, thank you for the additional info on Mercalli. I found the user manual for Mercalli, it really has more ways to customize settings. And the plugin offers more convenience as you pointed out. I have to think about it some more. I know the plugin works also with Magix MEP and Pinnacle Studio. Would the plugin automatically install on all your compatible video editors or do they expect you to buy it for each one separately?

I found another program from Engelmann Media GmbH, Videomizer2. I downloaded the trial, but have not installed it yet. I have CinemaHD 2.0 from them, which I got for free via the Giveaway Of The Day site.

Muvee will probably fix the frame-rate issue if enough people complain.

I agree. I just threw a couple more video clips in and the program really does a great job.

I just submitted a tech email to Muvee explaining the error in the frame rate.

One purchase is all you need to install the Mercalli plug-in to all compatible video editors. Just select the boxes for all the editors shown.

For $99, you can get Mercalli stabilizer included with Corel VideoStudio X6 Ultimate that just came out. You can use that Mercalli plug-in only with VideoStudio X6.

Earlier I mentioned DynaPel, but have now deleted mention of it after paying a visit to the DynaPel website of new. But for those of you who made note of it, I provide this WARNING:

Do not download SteadyHand stabilizer from DynaPel. It looks like the domain name has been taken over by somebody that I do not trust. There is also a download link on CNET's website for SteadyHand that takes you to a third party site that my anti-virus software says contains malicious software.

DynaPel change it's name to Nio Security and the only "steady" product they have now is hardware based and called SteadyEye, http://www.niosecurity.com/page/video-a ... iances/23/
