Recorded at 1080/50p. Ok for DVDs?

Postby John Walker » Mon Aug 07, 2017 5:53 am

New camera (Panasonic HC-X920) and I've recorded a project at 1080/50p. I've loaded a couple of clips in PE14 ad it appears to handle it ok. I seem to recall reading something about that setting being only suitable for Blueray.

Am I ok with this setting for making the ISO file for DVD and do I need to do anything in setting up the project in PE14?

Thanks
John

As I understand it, there is no 50p standard definition DVD format. So you won't be able to play it on a DVD player.

But maybe someone with more knowledge in this area will give us more details.

Thanks Steve,

Out of interest, I've just imported the clips into PE14 and made a quick trial project. It saved as an ISO ok with a frame rate of 25fps. Burnt the ISO onto DVD and it plays fine fortunately and the quality is very good.

I realise this isn't the quality that it was recorded at but at least the footage will be usable.

Should I set the camera to 50i for future recordings as I don't plan to work with Blueray? (very few of the people that I produce the DVD's for have Blueray players)

There's no harm in shooting at a higher frame rate, so it's up to you.

Premiere Elements will basically down convert the original to DVD specs during the burning process, shouldn't be a problem.

Steve and Chuck,

Thanks for your confirmations that it's ok to shoot at the higher rates and that Elements has no problem with that. I might be glad of the higher quality later.

Regards

John, you have mentioned 50p and 25p. Are you in PAL land rather than NTSC land? Just useful to know. :-D

I would not record in 50i mode. I would recommend that you record in 50p mode, because the picture appears much smoother and more like a film.

Even though your final output will be in 25p you should notice a much more clearer picture than if you recorded in 25p
