DVD - ISO - which resolution to use?

Postby John Walker » Wed Oct 26, 2016 11:06 am

When burning an ISO file I have two options for resolution that I'm not sure which one is best to use etc.

576 or 480

Both appear to have the same space required.

I will be burning DVDs for Pal and wide screen viewing.

Apologies if the answer is in your book Steve but i can't find it yet. (There isn't much that isn't in there :) )

720x576 is PAL resolution -- the European video TV format.

720x480 is NTSC resolution -- TV and DVD standard for North America and Japan.

As simple as that - thanks Steve :)

I presume then that I can burn discs from the same project for both Europen and N America. This would be excellent - I didn't have that option in my previous editing program so if I'm understanding correctly I can now burn discs send to relations in California.

You should be able to to. But I'd like to hear how it looks on a US DVD player.

Converting from PAL to NTSC used to be pretty tricky business -- more because of the different frame rates than the video resolution. But, in this more advanced digital video age, frame blending is usually very effective.

So please give it a go. And let us know the results.

Try sending them a PAL DVD (in addition to an NTSC one).

All European DVD players can play both formats natively. Maybe (in this instance) USA players have caught up with the ability to play both(?).
