GoPro and PRE Version 14

Postby Dotian » Tue Mar 15, 2016 5:41 am

Hi
I'm a complete newbie so excuse me if this is a dumb question. I'm thinking about buying a GoPro Hero 4 Black as well as PRE Version 14 to carry out the video editing. Browsing through the internet I believe that previous versions of PRE could not import the native GoPro format video files (H.264 CODEC I believe) and that third party software had to be used to covert this file format into a format PRE could recognise.
Could you tell me if it is now possible to import the native GoPro video files directly into PRE Version 14? Ideally I would want to copy the files from the GoPro sim card onto my computer first and then bring them into PRE14 rather than having to connect the GoPro to my computer and import directly from the camera.
Any help and guidance would be very much appreciated.
(P.S - just waiting for my copy of "The Muvipix(dot)com Guide to Adobe Premiere Elements 14" to be delivered by Amazon which no doubt will answer many of my future question!)

Thanks
Dotian

Welcome to Muvipix, Dotian! And thank you so much for supporting out book!

Your GoPro Hero shoots in a variety of resolutions. Premiere Elements is compatible with both the 1920x1080 high-def mp4 and the 4K mp4 -- so, you should be able to pretty easily edit the video in Premiere Elements. (Editing "natively" means something else. Virtually no video editors edit mp4s natively -- but that doesn't mean that they don't edit these video formats well.)

But before you take my word for it, there are a number of people in our Muvipix community who edit a lot more Go Pro footage than I do. No doubt they'll chime in with their real world experience using the Hero 4. I value their input much more than the official specs.

Hi Steve
Many thanks for your prompt reply. I look forward to receiving the input from the other "GoPro experts" in the community.
To add to my kudos with you I have just finished watching you PRE14 video on Lynda (dot)com - most useful and inforamtive.

I am most definitely NOT an expert, but I have a GPH4 black and I am using PPro 6. The MPEG4 files are easy to edit and easy to output. The files are an h.264 codec in an MPEG4 container.

Hi Sidd
Many thanks for your input. Another newbie question but what does "h.264 codec in an MPEG4 container" mean?
Is that how the GPH4 video files arrive straight out of the camera?

Thanks

Thanks Chuck. Looks like I'm not going to have any issues with the GoPro Hero 4 Black and Premiere Elements 14.
Time to get the wallet out!

The only "issue" I have encountered and it is manageable is depending on the settings that you record at (protune) you will need to do some color correction to the video.

http://abekislevitz.com/understanding-v ... the-hero4/
ProTune is a setting in the HERO4 that, if enabled, will force high bit-rate for all video modes (up to 60 Mbit/s) as well as activates a few adjustable video settings – White Balance, Color Tuning, ISO Limit, Sharpening, and Exposure Compensation. Prior to the HERO3+ v2.0 firmware update, this setting was only recommended for professionals due to the flat color style; however, I now recommend everyone to be using ProTune due to new changes we’ve pushed through. At the most basic level, if you enable ProTune and don’t touch the settings, your video footage will look exactly the same as it did without ProTune, but higher quality (higher bit-rate). We can dive a bit deeper and learn about the effects of the different settings, and how they can be used to increase the quality of your footage.
