Bob, thanks for the reply. You're right, I wasn't doing that! One of my problems is that I have a hard time seeing the handles and also what direction they are pointing. Somehow I need to be able to make them bigger!

Ron got the tutorial up today, got a few new ones out there (announcement coming soon). This is the first of a two part tutorial, the first part is free and contains info discussed in this topic.

On my previous editing system, Bogart for the the Casablanca machines and recently for Windows, you didn't have to cut frames to allow for the transition. The program did it automatically.
Has this always been a requirement for the Premiere Elements series?

It would be a nice addition to a future version or is there a reason against that.

Hi John,

In general transitions require overlapping media. How you achieve that overlap differs in the available editor applications. The convention in Premiere Elements (and Pro) is to use the trimmed handles to obtain the overlapped frames. The overlap is there and you should be able to double click on the transition in the expert time line to display the transition in an overlapped format. Bogart, I understand, shows an explicit overlap.

Either approach is fine. There is no right or wrong way. You just need to know the conventions of the editor you're using.

FYI, there is nothing stopping you from placing the second clip on the next higher track and manually overlapping them. You could then apply a fade in to the upper clip or apply a one ended transition.

Thank you for your explanation Bob.

Being a lazy bugger, I would like PRE to automatically trim back the clips for me to match the duration of the transition. (possibly with the option to switch it on or off)

What I have learnt from this thread is that I can drag the handles to the ends of the transition as the transition length shows in the timeline. I suppose that's quite obvious but I hadn't
thought to do that.

Cheers
