When do I loose the first format i worked on

Specific to Premiere Elements version 13

When do I loose the first format i worked on

Postby baleine » Wed Mar 30, 2016 8:21 am

Good morning,

I work on Windows 7, Premiere Element 13

When I work on a project, I save it first to .avi, then MP4.

When I want to go back to the .prel format, it asks me to retrieve the project in the .avi format and I lost the project that I first worked on...everything is integrated, and I do not see any of the different and separate photos or videos and audio that I first worked with.
They are there, but I would have to cut the video and audio to make any changes.

At what point do I loose the format that I first work on? .prel?
Thank you

Hi Baleine,

.PREL is the Premiere Elements project file (this is not a video file). As long as you do not delete your project you can open it again anytime. Open Premiere Elements 13 and from the main menu at the top of the screen click on File > Open Recent Project. If the project you want to open is not in the list then click on File > Open and browse to the location of the project file that you want to open.

Hope that helps :)

My experience is that as soon as you save this file either in the .avi or mp4 format, the . prel is not longer available, am I doing something wrong? am I missing a step here?

Hi Baleine,

Saving/Sharing your video project as a video file, either MP4 or AVI, does not do anything with the Premiere Elements project file at all (.PREL). The file is still where you saved it when you first saved your project. Are you overwriting the same project file every time you create a new project? Have you watched our Beginner Video Tutorials? We always recommend creating a separate folder for each project and giving each project file (.prel) a unique name (even if that name is just "Project1", "Project2", ...)

If you are following our recommendations your project file is in the folder you created when you first started your project and is named whatever you choose to name the project when you first saved it, such as "Project1.prel" or "MyProject.prel".

Let us know if you still have problems, just be sure to create a new project every time and put that in a new folder. That way you always keep your project files separate and easy to find and work with.

Hi Chuck
I never used to save it as SAVE AS! so now I created a folder for each project and saved my work and placed it in the file bearing the same name, is it safe to think that when I will save the project in the .avi format and the mp4 format, I will save in the same folder and the .prel file will remain intact and I will be able to make changes if need be?
Thank you!
