Transitions

Postby StevenG » Sat Feb 28, 2015 11:00 am

Is it possible to select one transition that could be placed between allclips simultaneously so that I do not have to place each transition one at a time, which can become tedious and time consuming if there are numerous clips? I realize that if this is possible, it would be the same transition. However, individual transitions could then be changed if desired.
Thanks.

The only way that you can set one transition for all is creating a slideshow. There is a dialogue box before placing items on the timeline and if I remember correctly before importing a folder. I haven't used PrEl in awhile so maybe someone else can help.

I haven't used Premiere Elements since 3.0.2, but can you put all of your clips on the timeline, select them all (ctrl-a I think, or just lasso them), right click, and select "insert default transition?"

...or something like that. :conf:

OK. I tried this without success. The transition is only being applied to the first clip, not to all clips.

Here is my sequence. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong?

Select the first clip
Command A (to select all clips)
Select a transition
drug the transition to 1st clip
Open Timeline on the top status bar of the MAC
Click on "Apply Default Transition"
Clic on done in the transition dialog box

Thanks.

I think the trick here is to first select the transition you want and make it the default transition. Do this by going into the transitions, find the one you want, right-click on it and left-click on "Set Selected as Default Transition." Then perform the other steps as Peru described:

Select one clip on the timeline first. This makes certain that your program "focus" is in the right section. Then do the Ctrl-A to select all the clips. Right-click on any of the selected clips, and then left-click on "Apply Default Transition."
Be yourself; everyone else is taken.

Hi Dave,
I must be doing something dumb.
I followed your directions.

When I right click on any of the selected clips, "Apply Default Transition" is greyed out; only "Apply Default Transition Along CTI" is available, with the following options: Audio or Video. I select video, and only one transition is applied to that specific clip.

Sometimes, I have also gotten the following message:
Can you see what I am doing wrong?
Thanks.

This has to do with how transitions are composed by video editors, Steve.

Whenever you add a transition, you must have a half second or so of additional footage beyond the end of one clip and beyond the beginning of the next to create the transitional segment -- the point at which both clips are on screen at the same time as one transitions to the other. If you don't, you get this message, which means that this will transitional segment will be created using freeze frames of the last available frame from one or both clips.

To avoid this, trim half a second from each clip so that the program will have the extra frames to build this transitional segment.

I explain this better, with illustrations, in my book, by the way.

Sometimes, Steve, I didn't get that message. Nonetheless, the transition was placed only between the clip on which I had the play head, and the next adjacent clip. This despite the fact that all clips were selected.

Yes. I followed Dave's instructions to the letter.
"Apply Default Transition" is greyed out. Only "Apply Default Transition along CTI" is available, and that doesn't do the trick.
I hope I am just doing something wrong, (although I have tried this a dozen times), and this is not another Adobe bug, where the MAC is ignored.
Have you tried duplicating this on a MAC with positive results?

I decided to "reboot". I deleted all clips in my practice video, grabbed a few clips and made a short "movie". Tried adding default transitions again, and this time it was successful! Who knows. I guess the transitions didn't like the previous clips. Anyway, seems to be working.
THANKS GUYS. Great advice, as usual.
I think I almost know enough to get started on making an actual movie! :-D
