CAD u37 mic not working

Postby StevenG » Fri Feb 20, 2015 3:47 pm

Hi,
I just received my CAD u37, and based on what you guys said, I was very excited to give it a try. After finally getting it set up (figuring out the desk tripod is quite a trick. Fortunately, there was a 10 year old kid giving a demo on Youtube, which helped somewhat!), I plugged it in and followed the packaged directions. However, each time I recorded, PrE 13 immediately quit working. I looked at Steve's video on Lynda again, and I think I got it set up correctly. My built in mic still works. Can anyone help with this problem?! Thanks.

I wonder if any of the audio settings in preferences would have anything to do with this problem?

Have you configured the CAD u37 in the system settings?

With the CAD u37 plugged in, click on the Apple logo, select System Preferences… and then click Sound. In the Sound panel, select the Input tab. Select the entry corresponding to the usb mike. You should see the blue input level bar rising and falling as you speak. Increase the input volume slider until the levels are in the upper range but not pinning at maximum level.

And be sure to check out our free tutorial on Configuring Audio Hardware for Narration in Premiere Elements.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the tips.
I followed all suggestions. First, in Apple System Preferences, I made sure the USB mic was selected.
Next, in PrE Preferences>Audio, I made certain the USB mic was selected.
All levels seemed to be working correctly.
Yet, as soon as I actually began recording, PrE crashed, not allowing me to use the USB mic to record narration.
Is there anything else I may be doing wrong, or forgetting to do?
Thanks.
Steve

Next think I would do is to test the microphone with another program, Windows Movie Maker or anything that records audio.

Chuck, He's using a Macintosh, not Windows.

Steve, if the levels appear to be working and you see the rise and fall as you speak into the microphone, the device is working properly. It sounds like there may be an issue with Premiere Elements. I'm primarily a Windows guy who knows a little about the Mac environment. Steve Grisetti has a lot of experience with Premiere Elements on a Mac. I'll defer to him for any ideas as to what to do at this point.

It wouldn't hurt to try using the microphone with another Mac recording app as Chuck suggested just to be sure there are no other issues and it's working properly. Many people use the free Audacity program for recording and working with audio. It's not as convenient as the Narration feature, but, as a workaround, you could record your narration in one of these other recording programs and import the audio file into Premiere Elements.

HI Guys,
Thanks for your help and concern. I hope we can get the CAD u37 to work properly.
I previously used Aperture and iMovie prior to switching to LR5 and PrE.
So, I tried the CAD u37 with iMovie and it works perfectly. Sounds good!
So, there is nothing wrong with the mic.
Do you think there is anything else that can be done to get it to work with PrE. After all, that's why I bought it. I don't think it should be necessary to use workarounds. There must be some way to get it to work properly?? Any additional thoughts would be appreciated. This is very frustrating.
Thanks.

Steven, can you confirm that you followed the procedures in the tutorial I linked you to above -- including setting the ASIO settings in Premiere Elements?

We need to know what you have tried before we recommend anything new.

I saw your post on the Adobe forums. The comment about the Premiere Elements readme saying that USB mics are not supported is dated. Here's the Premiere Elements 13 readme. There is nothing regarding USB mics in it. Early versions of Premiere Elements did have issues with USB mics, but I don't believe that's been the case for a while.

We have at least 3 people here using the CAD u37 with Premiere Elements without problems. While most of us are Windows users, Steve Grisetti is a Mac user. If there is an issue with the CAD u37 on a MAC, I would think he would be aware of it.

Could you post a screen capture of your asio settings panel so we can see it?

Steve, Bob
Thanks for your continued help.
I was not sure if there is a special way to include screen grabs, so I hope you can open these.
I included the Narration box which opens when you begin a narration, the Sound Input screen and the Audio Hardware screen. Please note that I do not have an ASIO screen. I do not know if that is because this is a Mac and not a PC. But the Audio Hardware screen seems to show that the USB mic is selected.

OK.
Yes. I watched the video for the second time. I noticed two things which may be of importance.
1. In the Narration box, when I click on the mic icon, it does not indicate the USB mic, it says "Front Left"
2. I do not have an ASIO screen, as indicated above, but rather an Audio Hardware screen.

I hope this helps ferret out the problem.
Thanks again.

I checked out the screen grabs and I do not think you will be able to open them.
How do I post a screen gran in my reply?

If, when you reply, you select the Full Editor, you'll see a tool along the bottom of the reply screen in which you can upload an attachment.

Thanks Steve.
I think you should be able to see the screen grabs referred to in my previous responses.
