A Bug's Life

Postby sidd finch » Tue Sep 13, 2016 10:54 am

In my pursuit of all things Macro I have been struggling to get my old macro lenses that I used on my GPH3 on to my GPH4. The plastic barrel of the GPH4 is less than a mm larger than 25mm so the ring lens that I used does not fit. In my latest effort I found a video that used the focus lens from a flashlight on the camera. It fit perfectly and works but because the focus lens is almost bell shaped the sweet spot for the camera is very difficult to maintain. It is super extra shallow DOF so trying to stay in focus for moving ants is difficult. Below is a still image I pulled from the video I took.

Of course putting a drop of sugar water on the tree really gets the ant population pumped.

I am hoping to get some video put together soon. But, I used the lens from this flashlight:

Sidd,

What do you do with all of the leftover parts from cannibalized equipment? :conf:

Well some of it sits in my "research" drawer. But, I swapped out the lens from the gopro and put that lens in the flashlight. So now I have a super strong flash light. It just does not focus into a spot light beam.

If you want to make one it is really simple.

1. Purchase flashlight & unscrew flashlight cap and remove lens.
2. Purchase GoPro protective lens cover
3. Using a hairdryer heat the GoPro protective lens until the glue softens and remove protective lens leaving the rubberized ring.
4. Super glue flashlight lens onto the rubberized protective lens ring that you removed the glass lens from.
5. let dry then place on camera
6. Enjoy.

Should look something like this when completed:

I cannot say it was my idea but it is still pretty cool. I kind of like the MacGyver side of these kinds of projects. The cost also makes it cheap enough to not worry if it is not perfect. The video is almost ready and you will see how cool this little camera lens is.
