3D Lens for GoPro

Postby RJ Johnston » Wed May 04, 2016 11:05 pm

I saw an article on ZDNet about a company selling a 3D lens that fits on a GoPro camera. You only need one GoPro 3 or 4 camera. I don't own a GoPro, but having a 3D lens using mirrors might persuade me to buy one. The lens is US $99 or $119 for waterproof version.

Interesting find, Robert.

Does that mean Go Pros can save their video in the MKV format?

One problem I noticed with the demo videos on YouTube is the left and right images are terribly misaligned. I tried aligning them in Sony Vegas Pro 12 in a side-by-side full project with the stereoscopic plugin, but the result was fair. Supposedly you don't need to do anything after shooting the video other than watching with VR googles. I think someone has tampered with the demo videos.

I don't think there's a MKV format. You shoot using one of the available GoPro formats as far as I can tell. Your video will then have the left eye on one half of the video and the right eye on the other half. That basically cuts the resolution to one-half the width of the original format, which I am not fond of. I prefer the setup I use with two cameras (Kodak Zx10) shooting full 1920x1080.

I'd wait until they start selling the lenses and there are some reviews. The company says they will start selling in late spring.

From what I have seen the results are pretty poor, There is a huge reduction in the size of the available viewing space of the camera. I think it is more of a novelty than something that could be actually used. Maybe if you shot in 4K but even the I do not think it would work that well. Your 2 camera setup seems much better suited to 3D than that lens.

I know that at one point GoPro made a 3D case to put 2 cameras in to record 3D but I am not sure if they still make them.

I sent away for this VR cardboard viewer, folding required, and used it to view the video -- corrected for vertical offset in Vegas -- of the 3D skier on my smartphone. The effect is better that way.

I copied one of my own side-by-side full 3D videos to my smartphone and viewed it with the VR viewer. That didn't work out so well, too much resolution. The lenses of the cardboard viewer create a fisheye effect so that it looks like I'm viewing from inside of a globe, and the sides of the scenes are heavily distorted. That works out well with smartphone VR cardboard apps where you are suppose to look around and see the sky if you tilt your head up or see the ground if you tilt your head down, etc..

Really wasn't worth it, but was fun for a short while. It's not something I want to use to view anything else. :gl:

That's my opinion of this whole VR sillyness. Just a gimmick. I can't imagine anyone using those cardboard or plastic monstrous viewing googles for any length to time.

Virtual reality and 3D seems like it should be so cool. But for the average person it seems like the curve is pretty high. At least you had some fun without spending a whole lot of cash. :)

The 3D thing is kinda faddy, but VR is already making waves in gaming. The processing power out there to push the data necessary to make a game worth playing in VR is quickly getting up to par. When you start adding 4K video technology, you can add VR video to the mix, which, depending on how you market it, could actually be pretty cool. Imagine wanting to attend a close relative's wedding, but they decide to hold it on a beach 4 states away. Wouldn't it be cool if you could stream a live 360º VR video? It would be way better than watching a video of an event like that later because you can turn around and look at whatever you want and basically BE there with everyone.

Frankly, I'm pretty interested in Microsoft's Hololens techonology.

I can see that being used as a simulator for learning to drive a car or fly a plane or for hitting a golf ball, for examples. I don't care for the idea of walking around with the googles on, especially if it induces motion sickness. I'm not even suppose to walk around wearing my active 3D glasses for fear I'll trip over something.

This is something I'm curious about as well. Not a fan of the 3D glasses, but I have a feeling that may not be how these work.
Ideally, it should allow you to properly and comfortably see your environment, but with the added projected holographic objects overlayed on top of it. Think heavy, electronic, magical sunglasses.

Maybe a better VR device would make the experience better.
