mpg files not compatible with iTunes

Postby yosale » Mon May 11, 2015 3:29 pm

PRE creates video files with an .mpg extension which are not compatible with iTunes.
How can I create files that are compatible? How do I convert my .mpg files using shareware to be compatible with iTunes?

Itunes can read MPEG3 and MPEG4 but there are multiple MPEG files:

MPEG-1: The most common implementations of the MPEG-1 standard provide a video resolution of 352-by-240 at 30 frames per second (fps). This produces video quality slightly below the quality of conventional VCR videos.

MPEG-2: Offers resolutions of 720x480 and 1280x720 at 60 fps, with full CD-quality audio. This is sufficient for all the major TV standards, including NTSC, and even HDTV. MPEG-2 is used by DVD-ROMs.

MPEG-3: Is used for music files

MPEG-4: A graphics and video compression algorithm standard that is based on MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 and Apple QuickTime technology. Wavelet-based MPEG-4 files are smaller than JPEG or QuickTime files, so they are designed to transmit video and images over a narrower bandwidth and can mix video with text, graphics and 2-D and 3-D animation layers.

Per what Sidd says, your best option for video for iTunes is an MP4 produced by going to Publish & Share/Computer/AVCHD using the preset for YouTube HD.

I tried to create my own Preset for the above, but I was not prompted for a name. Also, how do you set your own preset as the default preset?

Once you click on the Advanced button for any preset and then modify the settings, the program will prompt you to name your new preset when you finish and return to the Publish & Share panel. (Otherwise, by default it will name your preset "Copy of ... "

I used - Publish & Share/Computer/AVCHD using the preset for YouTube HD. Although it is now compatible with iTunes, the resulting movies have a lot of flickering all over the picture. Is there any way to avoid it?
Thanks,
Joe

This certainly shouldn't be the case.

When you say "flickering" what exactly do you mean? Do you mean that the video stutters, as if there's a problem with the playback, or do you mean that it keeps going light and dark?

Can you post a segment of the video to Vimeo or YouTube and link to it so we can see what it looks like?

Try exporting to Quicktime (.mov) and see if that works any better. Quicktime supports many different codecs, be sure the preset you select is using h.264 video with aac audio encoding.

To do what Bob suggests, you'll need to create a custom output -- which isn't hard.

Go to Publish & Share/Computer/MOV and click the Advanced button. In the Advanced workspace, set the Width and Height to 1280x720 (or 1920x1080) and the frame rate to 30 fps Progressive. (You may need to unlock the Contrain Proportions to set up this height and width.) Then make sure you've selected H.264 as your codec.

When you close the Advanced workspace, you'll be prompted to name the preset. Name it whatever you'd like. It will then be available whenever you want to output a high-def AVC MOV.
