Moving a project in PE 11to PE12I created a large project (2hr35min) in PE 11. I was left with limited hard drive space, almost zero and I am not able to save it to the computer. I have deleted what I can from the HD, but it is not enough. I have since purchased a new computer which I intend to use primarily for editing. I am relatively a novice but I have developed a new interest in my retirement years in video editing. The new computer has PE 12 already installed with no projects started in the program. How do I transfer a project and all of the associated video and audio clips to the new computer. I have heard some talk about accessing the project archiver and assigning a drive letter to a portable drive in the two computers and copying all the files to the drive and then using that drive and attaching it to the new computer and downloading the files that way. I don't know how to access the project archiver and how to assign a specific drive letter to a portable drive. If it matters, I have a Seagate Back Up Plus USB drive for my use. Steve G has helped me in the past during my learning experience with PE 11. Steve G recommended this site for advice. I only created one project ever and it is this one. I would appreciate any help and advice if anyone out there can. Thank you in advance to all. Charles Marchiano
Re: Moving a project in PE 11to PE12Hello Charles and welcome to Muvipix.
Generally it is not a good idea to migrate projects between versions of PrEl. Better to complete the project in the version that it was started in; there is no problem having different versions of PrEl on the same machine so installing PrElv11 on the new computer isn't a problem. I am not a PrEl user so I'll leave the advice on moving the project across to the new machine to someone with PrEl knowledge. Re: Moving a project in PE 11to PE12Yes, using the project archiver to save your project file and its media to a removable drive would be the ideal way to go, Charles. You should then be able to copy the files from your external drive to your new computer.
As John says, we usually recommend not opening a project created with an older version of the program with a newer version of the program -- but I've found that versions 11 and 12 are close enough that you probably can open a version 11 project in version 12. I'd just make sure to save a copy of the original .prel file, just it case doing this corrupts the project file. HP Envy with 2.9/4.4 ghz i7-10700 and 16 gig of RAM running Windows 11 Pro
Re: Moving a project in PE 11to PE12Thank you for your reply. Do you think I will be able to transfer PE 11 to my new computer from the old one or should I go to Adobe and download PE 11directly? Is that a possibility. Does Adobe still allow downloads of previous versions. Of corse I have my serial number. Thanks Charles
Re: Moving a project in PE 11to PE12Hopefully you have the Premiere Elements 11 installation files, either on a DVD or archived to your hard drive. You'll need to install it to your new computer. You can't just copy it over.

Re: Moving a project in PE 11to PE12When you say archive the program what exactly do I need to do? I downloaded my PE 11 program directly from Adobe when I purchased it. Do you think as an alternative i will be able to down load the program again?
Re: Moving a project in PE 11to PE12You can't archive the program. You archive a project file, along with its associated media files.
In Premiere Elements, go to the File menu and select Project Archiver. Then direct it to where you'd like your project and media files saved. HP Envy with 2.9/4.4 ghz i7-10700 and 16 gig of RAM running Windows 11 Pro
Re: Moving a project in PE 11to PE12
If you have an Adobe account, you should be able to do so.
Re: Moving a project in PE 11to PE12Thanks for the help. I'll try that when I get home.
Re: Moving a project in PE 11to PE12Tried to download PE 11 from Amazon where I purchased in July. They say that my key has expired. Currently have an e-mail in to their support. Expect a answer sometime, I hope.
Re: Moving a project in PE 11to PE12Correction, I downloaded from Amazon and right now they are not permitting me to download again
Re: Moving a project in PE 11to PE12
That's the disadvantage of not purchasing directy from Adobe. If you can find somebody who has the installation file, you can install it and use your serial number to activate it as long as you haven't used both activations.
Re: Moving a project in PE 11to PE12I have to report some progress. Adobe to let me download the old vesion PE 11 on to my new computer. What I need to know now is- I have to assign a letter to my portable drive in both of my computers so I can archive the project to it and then copy the archived project to my new PC. How is that done. Do I just archive the project or do I have to archive all of the video clips and audio clips too. Thanks to all for the advice and help. Charles Marchiano
Re: Moving a project in PE 11to PE12I don't know that it's necessary to assign a letter to your external drive if you're only using it to move files from one computer to another. However, you can do so by opening Windows Disk Management, right-clicking on the drive and selecting the option to Change Drive Letter or Paths.
When you archive a project, the program will copy the project file and all of its media clips to a new location. HP Envy with 2.9/4.4 ghz i7-10700 and 16 gig of RAM running Windows 11 Pro
Re: Moving a project in PE 11to PE12I was sucessful in moving my project to my new computer. Thanks to all who contributed their thoughts. I saved my project to my computer using MPEG 2 1080i settings and the saved file would not play back on my computer in win 8. Error message saying that the format I used was not compatible with win 8. I saved and viewed my video using the same settings under ACVHD instead of MPEG. With my old PC I saved and viewed a video on my PC using MPEG with Win 7. What is the difference. Thanks for any help and explainations.
