Weird glitch in Premiere Elements 11 Timeline

Postby Elwood » Mon Dec 17, 2012 7:27 pm

Hi, Steve & Co.

I wrote about a glitch in my Premiere Elements 10 timeline using Mac Snow Leopard and it was never solved. That took place as I was working on a project in the middle of August 2012. It was so maddening, that I switched back to my iMovie software. I hoped that the new Elements 11 would be free of glitches and I'm pretty depressed to find that a slightly different, but similar glitch has appeared in my first project using the new software.

It happens in both the Quick and Expert mode. It's hard to describe & so was the last one. But here goes:

I dragged five opening titles into my timeline. I created them in Photoshop (in the correct proportion for a widescreen video) and then made them into JPEGs and resized them to 750 pixel height x 1333 width.

Not long after I began adding transitions between the titles, the GLITCH showed up. Suddenly, as I moved the cursor over the various graphics, they began going crazy and, in fact, they jumped out of order on the timeline. It was as though the cursor was a magic wand, which sent the stuff in my timeline into a frenzy.

Since this is so hard to describe, I made a video of the glitch but I can't seem to import it into one of my galleries. I get this message:
Destination directory albums/userpics/22058/ is not writable by the script !

I seem to be glitch prone. Please help!

Thanks,
-Elwood

First, I do recommend you render your timeline (press Enter) whenever you see yellow lines above your clips in Expert view. This will certainly include any time you add titles.

I've seen that jumpiness on my Mac too. And it seems to happen when you're trying to work on one part of the timeline while the CTI playhead is on another part of the timeline. The program isn't sure if you want to focus on where you are or where the CTI is, so it starts flipping around.

The solution is to just make sure the CTI positioned over the area of the timeline where you're working.

Thanks, Steve, I really appreciate your willingness to help us rubes. I do render the timeline regularly, but I'll pay extra attention to doing so as I work. And I'll pay even closer attention to keeping my CTI playhead right over the area I'm working in. I'll report back to let you know whether that solves my problem. Or not.

Best, E

Hi, Steve & Muvipix Team-

Thanks for your earlier tip about keeping the CTI playhead positioned over my work area to help keep my timeline stable. Seems to be working.

I have another question and can't find it addressed in a post here in Muvipix Premiere Elements 11 forum. The link below will take you to two Q.T. videos of an animation project I just finished. The animation was done in Toon Boom Studio (a vector program like Flash) and the three parts (opening credits, the animation & closing credits) were exported as high quality QuickTime Movies. I brought them into Elements 11 and added the soundtrack, sound effects and transitions. All went well.

But when I viewed my saved large Q.T. video (I use QT Player 7), it had small black bars on either side. I recall that happening with an earlier video I created in Elements 10, so I went back into this Elements 11 project and slightly increased the size of each clip to make sure they were larger than the Monitor Panel. In the 2nd video example (using the link below), you can see what I got in my earliest Q.T. The 3rd Q.T. is the latest version after two tweaks and, if you look closely, you'll see tiny black lines appearing intermittently at the top of the video.

But here's the odd thing--when I posted the first video (very low res) on Smugmug (not my screenshot videos of the Q.T.s), it looked fine. (I left it up there so you can see what I mean) I'm just wondering why it looks weird in my Q.T. Player 7, but not when I put it up on the web?

Do you have any idea why is it doing that and how can I output videos that fit the Q.T. frame properly?

-Thanks Once Again,
-Elwood

I dunno, Steve, maybe you shouldn't waste your valuable time with my question. It may simply be an "Adobe product not quite meshing with an Apple product" glitch. I posted the video on Vimeo and it looks dandy, no black lines are showing up.

So, Happy Holiday to All at Muvipix!

That is a very nice animated piece, Elwood. As Paul says, clever and quick.

Thanks, Steve & Paul. Better clever and quick than short and stout. Or, wait, are they the same thing? I'll report in again after I've had a chance to revisit that earlier project & let you know if the new Timeline trick outfoxes the glitch.

Happy New Year!
