Help with Mpeg Streamclip please

Postby Briantho » Tue Feb 22, 2011 8:43 am

In Windows Media Player this short, silent thing plays just fine. I'm trying to create a .MOV from it using Mpeg Streamclip but it just doesn't show in the window. Am I doing something wrong? Is there something strange about the file even though it looks fine in WMP?

Many thanks in advance.

See if Super does a better job. I'm not sure conversion to MOV is one of MPEG Streamclip's strong points.

Thanks Steve - I'll try it in a minute. What I find strange is that I couldn't even view the file with Mpeg Streamclip although all other AVIs I have show up just fine in the Mpeg Streamclip window... Do you think there is some characteristic of this file that makes it so different?

I tried Brian and it did not show up for me. However it is an XVID avi... I may not have the codec installed.

Thanks for that Paul. Steve's SUPER program at least plays it so it looks like things are going in the right direction now. I'll be back with more info later :-)

I looked around a bit more and stumbled over 'DivX for Mac' which I installed and with that on board the Mpeg Streamclip showed the clip and appeared to do the conversion I wanted to MOV format. However, I couldn't get the sound to come out. I tried a few different settings but nothing helped so in the end I just dragged the AVI clips straight onto the FCP timeline, rendered it and everything just worked!

My knowledge of codecs etc is practically non-existant. Most of the time I'm doing multicam videoing of shows etc, I synchronize everything (including the sound off the soundboard if I'm lucky) and then I spend weeks of pleasure doing all the editing. Finally I practically give away the DVDs to members of the cast etc. As all the material comes from my few camcorders I never seem to have to worry about mixing in footage etc from unknown territories but I suppose I'll have to get to grips with it. Do you know if there's a dummies intro to this area Paul, Steve, anyone?

I was able to convert it to MOV (MPEG-4 Video) using Arcsoft's Media Converter 7. You have a 15-day trial period with no other limitations.
