Can import .avi files into Sony Vegas ?

Postby ryan_khoo » Sat Apr 18, 2009 8:22 am

Anyone knows whether we can import .avi files into Sony Vegas ?

I imported some .avi files into Sony Vegas but when I play it, only the audio sound can be heard but I cannot see any video, the video just show a black screen.

Any software that I have to download ?

Thanks

Where are the AVI files from Ryan?
Not all AVI files are the same, there are DV-AVI, DivX-AVI, and others.
This is the same problem we have in Premiere Elements at times.

You can try converting the file with Super or even Windows Movie Maker, convert to DV-AVI as Vegas is fine with that.
1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.

Hi Chuck, to be honest I do not know where the avi files are from, my friend pass it into a thumb drive to me. He says it is avi files of his kids from his video camera.

How do I find out whether they are DV-AVI, DivX-AVI, or others ?

How do I convert from one avi to another avi like DV-AVI ?

Thanks

You can download gspot, free codec program. It will show you what codec was used to encode the file.

If the file will open in Windows Movie Maker there is a tutorial on how to convert with Movie Maker to DV-AVI in the Products section.

Super is also free and will convert most any type file to DV-AVI also.

Problem with Super is that it will only convert to DV-AVI with the PAL frames size of 720x576... this will make your video look odd in an NTSC project. Maybe better to use MPEG_Streamclip. But first let's see what the AVI format is. Here is the link to GSpot that Chuck mentions:

Thanks Paul & Chuck,

I downloaded the gspot and inport the avi file, I saw the following info:

Under Audio:
codec: 0x0055 MPEG-1 Layer 3
Info: 48000Hz 128 kb/s tot , Joint Stereo
Stat: Codec(s) Installed
I also noticed a green rectangle with the word CBR is lighted up

Under Video:
codec: DX50
Name: DivX 5.x/6.x
Status: Codec(s) are NOT Installed
I also noticed a green rectangle with the word MPG4 is lighted up

So, what I shall do next ?

Thanks

Under Container:
Note: 12 bytes unneeded bytes at end of file
AVI v1.0
Interleave: 36 ms (1.1 v.frames)
Audio frames: Split across interleaves
Video: 54.5 MB (91.37%)
Audio: 4.65 MB (7.79%)
AVI Overhead: 513 KB (0.84%)

The answer to your question is Yes, I import avi into Vegas all the time. If you don't get a picture, you need the right codecs as suggested.

For a quick fix, run the avi thru Virtual Dub and resave it, that worked once for me before I got the right codecs.

The clip is DivX... you can download the appropriate codec from here http://www.divx.com/en/products/software/windows/divx
You will then be able to see and edit the video in Sony Vegas.

Mrs Twosheds says that I have two cardinal rules:-

Rule 1) John is never wrong.

Rule 2) If John is wrong, rule 1) applies. :-D

Or unless Mrs. Twosheds says John is wrong, then he is definitely wrong and Mrs. Twosheds is right.
This is rule number 3 and the only possible way that John could ever be wrong :-
1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.

Hello there!

I have the same problem, and the advice above didn't helped me :(

Maybe you have some time to check into my issue, and help me with an advice.
So, I have an .avi file, captured with my Toshiba H20 video camera, in FullHD 1920x1080.
I checked first with Gspot and look what it's saying:

File Length Correct
OpenDML (AVI v2.0)
Video: 129 MB (98.28%)
Audio: 2.06 MB (1.57%)
AVI Overhead: 208 KB (0.15%)

Video:
codec: h264
name: h.264/mpeg-4 avc
status: codecs are installed
frame/s: 29.970
pic: 1920x1080

Audio:
codec: 0x00ff (AAC)
info: 48kHz 128kb/s (2 channels)
status: codec installed

I put here what I think is most important. Currently codec pack is Divx, from the link provided above, but I also tried other codec packs.
I can play the movie with VLC or SMPlayer (based on Mplayer).
Look what SMPlayer is saying:

General
File
F:/video/IMAG0014.avi
Size
135007 KB (131 MB)
Length
00:02:14
Demuxer

Selected codec

I can open the file in Cyberlink Powerdirector, but not in Vegas Movie Studio platinum. Powerdirector I have full license, but for Vegas I have only trial, if this make some difference. In Vegas, when I click the file in internal Explorer, on status bar it appear:
Video: Stream attributes could not be determined
Audio: Stream attributes could not be determined

Can you help me somehow?

Thanks!

Your file is not DIVX, it is mpeg-4 (h.264) packed into an avi container instead of a mpeg container. Did your camera create the avi file? From what I've been able to find, the H20 only records to mov files. If your camera didn't create the avi file, how did you get the avi?

VLC doesn't depend on external codecs and will play strange non-standard mixes of container formats and codecs that other players will not. Do you have the current Quicktime player and does it play in that?
