Postby wineishealthy » Mon Mar 23, 2009 5:11 pm

I just ordered a new PC from dell and im not sure if this is the right configuration for high def video editing. can some one help me?
XPS 625
AMD Phenom X4 9850 Black Edition (2.5GHz/125W)
8GB DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz
Dual 1024MB ATI Radeon 4870
750GB NCQ SATA 2 Hard Drive (7200 RPM) w/ 16MB DataBurst Cache

I can cancel and order this
Studio XPS
intel® Core™i7-920 Processor(8MB L2 Cache, 2.66GHz)
12GB Tri-Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz - 6 DIMMs
750GB - 7200RPM, SATA 3.0Gb/s, 16MB Cache

They are both excellent machines, both quad core CPU and lots of RAM, good video cards.
The Studio XPS will probably be a little faster.

You must have XP or VISTA 64 bit OS on those, what editing software are you planning to use?
1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.

I did choose the 64 bit.
Pinnacle ultima master. I would like the avid liquid but cant afford it.
So you think the studio is better?
Tks

The i7 processor is really fast, and really new. Should last you a long time before it is out of date (maybe 6 months or so ;) )

Don't know a thing about Pinnacle and how well or if it runs on 64bit, can't help you there.
I would think that someone here would know about it however.

I am partial to Intel over AMD but that is just me.

Looks like a great editing machine. I am drooling over here.
Happy Editing,

Me too. I have a reasonable understanding of the Intel product line; I remain confused by AMD's line up.
AMD Ryzen 3900x 12C/24T, ASUS x570 mobo, Arctic Liquid Freezer ll 280, Win11 64 bit, 64GB RAM, Radeon RX 570 graphics, Samsung 500GB NVMe 980 PRO (C:), Samsung 970 Evo SSD (D:), Dell U2717D Monitor, Synology DS412+ 8TB NAS, Adobe CS6.

I'm thinking about a Dell too for when I get a Panasonic TM300 and begin to work with AVCHD footage. BUT I'd like a portable, in particular I was thinking of a Studio 15 with the following configuration:

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40Ghz, 3MB, 1066MHz)
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium SP1 - English
LCD: 15.4" Wide Screen WXGA WLED (1280 x 800) Display with TrueLifeâ„¢
3072MB 800MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [1x2048 + 1x1024]
Video Card: 256MB ATI Mobility RADEON HD 3450

I'll also have my Acer external screen connected to it most of the time.

I was thinking of an Inspiron 15 but as far as I can see that doesn't have a Firewire port and I've still got a lot of life left in my DV camcorders.

What do you think - should I be OK?

Many thanks in advance for your opinions :-)
24" iMac. 17" MBP. FCPX and a little bit of Premiere Pro. Nine recent Panasonic HD camcorders. Many (but never enough) terabytes of external storage...
