Creating WMV files...

Postby Bob D » Wed Sep 03, 2008 7:40 pm

I seem to have run into a quirky problem. I have about a 6 minute project that I want to get into wmv format so I can put up in the gallery for some friends to see. I usually turn to Windows Movie Maker to do this with an avi file exported from PE4. Windows MM gives the ability to make it as close to the cap (50MB) for uploading to the gallery. So I bring my avi file into MM and it says that 71MB is what it should take. I lower it to 52MB and export it - it comes out to 48MB. It looks fantastic... except about 45 seconds from the end I have one still image that should last on the screen for about 3 seconds. When playing this back that image turns out to be a blip and then it is gone. I review the avi file and it looks fine.

So one may say to just export it from PE4. Yes I did that and the 3 second clip shows up file. The only issue is that the file is 22MB and obviously the quality is not as good.

So now to my question... are there any other good alternatives to Windows MM?
I tried Nero 7, but it doesn't export to WMV.

Sorry to follow up on my own post but I have found a solution. I have a little used program MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 11 that I fired up, brought in my avi file and exported as wmv file. It turned out to be 41.5MB file and the missing 3 second still shot shows up! The results look fine.

Whenever I have had still images that didn't appear for the correct length of time or not at all or quirky, I have traced the problem back to the "Optimize Stills" video rendering option. That option appears on the video rendering tab in Project settings and in the File > Export > Movie dialog. I remember someone on the Adobe forum had the same problem and unchecking that option solved their problem.

Well I gave the unchecking of "Optimizing Stlls" a try and in my case it didn't help.

Sorry it didn't help, but it's good you tried, Bob. I don't have a Plan "B."
