Re: The New York Times re Acer's Rise v Dell v HPvery interesting - thanks for posting George
Re: The New York Times re Acer's Rise v Dell v HPThe chief factor omitted from the story is that the price can be a determining factor in what makes the most popular brand. Acer is gaining ground because they're underselling the competitors, not because they make the best computers.
Which is not to say that they make bad computers, by any means. They're adequate machines. It's just that Dell made its reputation through service and quality (though service has fallen a bit in the last few years). HP through consistently dependable product at a good price. But, in these leaner times, the most successful computer companies may just be the ones that sell their products for the less. Re: The New York Times re Acer's Rise v Dell v HPYou said it in a nutshell Steve. Acer has been underselling most everybody for a long time. I must say that their quality seems to be getting better - I didn't think much of them at all a few years ago. However, they're basically selling a disposable product in their low end stuff. If something goes significantly wrong out of warranty you don't have enough invested to warrant bothering to get it fixed.
Be yourself; everyone else is taken.

Re: The New York Times re Acer's Rise v Dell v HPAcer has some really good laptops and then they have some junkers. The same could be said for Dell. For me, where Acer started their turn around was with the Gemstone series. Pretty good quality build at a very competitive price. I think Dell hit a bit of a dry spell when it comes to design, but I think that is coming to an end.
I wish I were creative enough to write something witty here.
