EarthquakeWoke up at 4:30 to an earthquake that was 5.2 near the Indiana border in IL. News said people felt it in Atlanta to Chicago. Anyone feel it?

Re: EarthquakeSome people here in Milwaukee claim they felt a tremble.
But we've got no big, nasty fault lines here, like you do there, Cheryl. Still, that's quite a distance to even feel that! HP Envy with 2.9/4.4 ghz i7-10700 and 16 gig of RAM running Windows 11 Pro
Re: EarthquakeWe are about 150 miles away and it sounded like thunder at first, then a long rumble with everything clanging. Nothing like a jolt first thing in the am! But, sure it was nothing compared to the quakes in CA.

Re: EarthquakeActually that's what the one I was in as a kid in CA sounded like. It was 6.3, so very similar.

Re: EarthquakeI woke up at 4:15 for some reason and was trying to get back to sleep when I felt the house shake around 4:39AM. I heard some creaking too. We live in the NW suburbs of Chicago. First I thought it was a strong wind shaking the house. Then I thought it was a large cougar on my roof! (anyone near Chicago will get that joke!)

Re: EarthquakeI live 20 minutes from downtown St. Louis and I did not feel the one at 4:30 just sleep thru it. But I DID feel the after shock around 10:00 am. at work. That was weird.
Re: EarthquakeThe one at 4:30 was much, much stronger than the one at 10:15. Ric, you must be a heavy sleeper! Bob, you'll have to explain the cougar. When it first hit and the bed was shaking, my first thought was 'poltergeist' so jumped up and the floor was shaking then it hit me it was an earthquake.

Re: EarthquakeI have to chuckle at the thought of cougars and poltergeists. I've never experienced poltergeist activity, so that wouldn't be my first thought. I'm assuming Bob D is referring to the cougar (puma) that was killed earlier this week and not the other kind of cougar that frequents "cougar bars". Although, if it was *that* kind of cougar on his roof it would an interesting story
Re: EarthquakeYears ago someone predicted an earthquake for the people living on the New Madris fault. It was supposed to be of some great magnitude. It would demolish parts of AR, TN, MS, MO, KY,. and several more. Well, it didn't happen on the predicted date but you could not get a hotel room for 200 miles in and around the affected area. News crews lined the streets and helicopters hovered over the Mississippi River in hopes they could catch it running backwards. I may be wrong here, but if someone predicted an earthquake was going to happen, I don't think I would be renting a hotel right in the middle of it. They had T-shirts, night gowns, caps, etc printed up that said "Fiesta on the Fault" or "If You are here when the earthquake hits, it your own fault." These people went crazy. I think this was in the late 1980's. I don't remember the exact year. I was living in Tx but all my family were in NE AR right in the middle of it

Re: EarthquakeGood one Bob. Your second cougar would be a fascinating story indeed. You are right with the first thought though.
A few years ago we discovered a hole in our roof where some raccoons had eaten away part of the roof. Ever since then my first thought is that some sort of animal is in the attic or on the roof trying to get in. Re: EarthquakeDonna the one you are talking about was 1990, Dec. 3rd. Remember that date well since we just moved to IL and closed on a house.
The prediction was the numbers 1 thru 0 stood for something. 12,3 was Dec 3rd, the 4 thru 8 was the time and magnitude, and the 9 & 0 was 1990. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_q ... i_n8733272 aka Cheryl

Re: EarthquakeCheryl,
I believe that is it. My sisters lived in Blytheville, Arkansas at the time and they said they couldn't get down the streets with the hotels on them.. It was crazy. I am glad everyone is o.k. from this last quake. I have never experienced one and hope I never do. The hurricanes here are enough for me. Donna Go out and make it a great day. The choice is yours!
