Using MPEG Slipstream 1.1 to Convert Files

Postby Chuck Carr » Sat Feb 23, 2008 6:43 pm

I have never converted a file before. I am trying to convert our choir video from UDF format to AVI format to add titles and credits. I have downloaded MPEG Slipstream 1.1 and Apple Quicktime.

I ran MPEG Slipstream and selected open, then located the DVD in my DVD player. There were a number of files there i.e. Video_TS.VOB, then VTS_01_1.1.VOB to _1.5.VOB What do I do? Do I open one file at a time or select them all and open them?

What do I do after that?

Here is a thread over on the Adobe forum that explains how to use MPEG STrteamclip in some detail. Note you need Quicktime Pro (not Quicktime) or the Quicktime Alternative as detailed in the thread.

Regarding your VOBs... not sure if you can open multiple files... may be a batch convert facility. You could try with one first to check all is OK. Note the Video_TS.VOB is not a video file.

The link in Post#2 goes into great detail in converting MPEG2 to DV-AVI files... be sure to Click "Show all Messages". A VOB file is basically an MPEG2 file. So in the link just substitue "MPEG2" with "VOB".

Paul,

I went to the Adobe forum to read the references. I then went to filehippo to download the free Quicktime alternative. 2.4 was the latest version. I tried to download it but was being forced into taking out a member ship. What am I doing wrong?

You need version 1.8.1 as stated in the instructions not 2.4... I just went and downloaded it... no need to register. just click "Download this Version" in the top right.

I'm Back! I downloaded Qicktime Alternative 1.8 and installed it. I am now trying to make a copy (burn?) of the original DVD in case I screw up in trying to convert files from UDF (OVB/MPEG?) to AVI.

Two questions: 1) How do you make Windows Media Player start at the beginning again? I keep getting frustrated by having the DVD begin where I shut it down.

2) How do I copy my original DVD in WMP? I inserted a brand new Sony DVD-RW into my G (destination) drive and the original into my F (source drive). I have selected Burn and highlighted all files on the original, but am unable to drag them into the play list. I then tried to drag and drop my F drive onto my G drive. I am directed then to format the DVD in the G drive. It is a preformatted disk.

Continuosly confused in Toronto,

Chuck Carr

Random Thought: Is it possible to import/capture the UDF files on the DVD into PE4.0 without all this copying and file conversion?

Paul,

I became frustrated with my inability to copy the DVD, so went ahead with converting the files directly from the original DVD. I followed the detailed instructions that you had posted elsewhere on 20-Feb-2008 at 08:12 am. Things were going great until MPEG Streamclip crashed. I selected one file to open and then followed your instructions. The file was saving to a folder that I had created on my new, 500 Gb. E: drive. Any suggestions? My ultimate goal is to import the DVD into PE4.0 and add titles and credits.

Chuck, is your new drive formatted FAT32 or NTFS?
You can find out by going to
Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Computer Management / Disk Management
The file system should say NTFS, if it doesn't we can help you convert.

Paul/Chuck,

I thought that I would give it one more try before going to bed. I shut everything downn but Outlook and loaded MPEG Streamclip. Everything went well. I was able to locate and open the file that I wanted to open and started exporting it as an AVI to the folder on my 500 Gb. E; drive which I have set up for video editing. I got to 6% when I received an error message that something had gone wrong and Streamclip had stopped reponding. Any recommendations?

Chuck,

I was concerned that the DVD disk was at fault, so downloaded MPEG_Streamclip and quicktime alternative to my Lenovo (IBM) T 61 laptop which also runs Vista Ultimate. I attempted to convert the first file from VOB to AVI and received the same error message,

"MPEG Streamclip has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available"

Windows has not replied.

Could the problem be with Vista by chance?

Chuck,

Q: Could the problem be with Vista by chance?

A: I have no idea. I have just started using Vista and understand that there are incompatibilities. This could be one. I have no way of knowing. I have contacted the author of the DVD and requested access to his original tapes. If they are mini-DVDs and fit into my Panasonic 3CCC camcorder, we're in business.

Thanks for your concern and support.
