Phone cameras

Postby Steve Grisetti » Tue Jun 19, 2018 1:54 pm

When I was a kid, I had an Instamatic camera. It used a 'fixed focus' lens -- which meant essentially that it didn't focus at all. In bright light and daylight, you got a pretty good snapshot. But in dimmer light... Well, it didn't really work in dimmer light. But, aside from the shutter and the thumb-driven film drive, the camera had no moving parts.

When I take pictures with my phone, on the other hand, it really does seem to be focusing.

Does anyone know, do phone cameras actually have little mechanical lenses moving back and forth to focus?

Chuck, that is the most dead-on answer I've ever gotten to a question! Thanks!

If any of you use your phone for electronic deposit of checks you can see the auto focus working. On my tablet the focus seems to take a second or less to get a sharp photo. But you can see it bounce from blurry to sharp to blurry then locks back in on the sharp and you hear a click as the photo is taken.

That is good to know. I thought that the whole phone focus was just software driven and did not have an mechanical movement.
