Another example of the shift from purchasing to subscription:

I agree with Sidd how is this “owning” a car?
Be yourself; everyone else is taken.

That's why it's in quotes.

How does this differ from a conventional lease?

Aside from the $500 deposit, there's no down payment. And Care by Volvo, the company says, covers everything — monthly vehicle payment, maintenance (including oil changes) and wear coverage, including tires, brakes, wiper blades, road hazards, 24/7 concierge service and roadside assistance, plus insurance through Liberty Mutual. The policy features $250,000 bodily injury protection per person and $500,000 bodily injury coverage per accident, with a $500 deductible for both comprehensive and collision coverage. Volvo also says the flat rate covers expected damage repairs at the end of a subscription period, though how far that coverage will actually go remains to be seen.

Volvo's subscription is probably the most lease like offer around. Even their web site refers to the subscriber as "lessee" (see note at bottom of their web page). Other subscription services are quite different. Here is an article from Edmonds that may help and another from U.S. News and World Report.

Yes, you did, but the article just calls it the new way to own a car.

Doesn't work for someone like me that keeps their cars for 10 years or more.
At $600 per month (as shown on the website on link in post 1) it would cost me $72,000 over 10 years.

It doesn't work for me either.
My vehicles are: 2001, 2003, and 2011, and we intend on keeping them for at least another 7-8 years.
