Question re USB3.0 to USB3.0

Question re USB3.0 to USB3.0

Postby George Tyndall » Thu Jan 25, 2018 12:05 pm

My Source Drive B is at the rear, my two new 3.0 target drives, F and G, are at the front of the machine.

Would it be better, in terms of transfer speed, to one at a time move F and G to the rear for the transfer?

Thank you.

Are all of your USB ports 3.0 ? On my machine the 3.0 ports are in the back and the front ports are only 2.0. That being said I would have to connect my external drives to the 3.0 ports in the back of the machine for optimal transfer speeds.

USB 3 should be significantly faster than the drives you are using so even if the data transfer goes from one bus to another the speed should be roughly the same.

Even if all four drives are USB3.0?

Thank you.

Use Windows Resource Monitor and you can test it for yourself.
It will show you the transfer speed.

SSPro is estimating 19 hours total for 2.31TB from back port to front port.

When I do drive G I'll mount it on the back alongside B.

Where to find the Resource Monitor? Isn't that the one that pops up during transfer? It did not pop up this time.

Thank you.

This is the first time I know about this. Thanks.

The graph labeled Disk says 10MB/sec. Is this the correct place to be looking?

Last night, when I was transferring rear port to rear port, I was getting 30MB/sec., according to the pop-up.

Whoa!

From rear USB 3.0 port and drive to front USB 3.0 port and drive: 10 MB/sec

From rear USB 3.0 port and drive to rear USB 3.0 port and drive: 100 MB/sec = 10X faster*
______
*Varies from 80 to 180

SmartSyncPro is currently estimating 4 hours to complete the rear to rear process v. 19 hours for the rear to front process yesterday.

Question: why does the graph area read 1GB/sec?

Thank you.

Is it steady at 1 BG/s or does it go up and down?

The graph is steady, but the Resource Monitor fluctuates, from a low of 9MB/sec to a high of over 200. SSPro at the moment is informing me that new Drive G, which like Drive B is at the rear of the machine, has an elapsed time of nearly 8 hours, with about 4.5 to go. If that proves true, it means mounting both drives on the rear saves a number of hours in comparison with one on the back and one on the front.

BTW, an interesting new observation: the problem drive, Drive A, will no longer mount on a USB 3.0 port but will on a 2.0. :conf:

Once I'd verified that Drive B was fully backed up on new Drive F, I decided to Format Drive A and then try backing B up to it -- but Win 7 informed me that it was unable to format Drive A. :ha:

Does it make sense to attempt to format Drive A in the hope that it will once again be functional on a USB 3.0 port? I'd love to have all four drives, A,B,F and G be functional.

I've decided that, even if you said "yes," I couldn't bring myself to do it. Instead, I'm running it from a USB 2.0 port, but I'm no longer using it as my primary external HDD. I'm using B instead, then backing it up to A, F and G.

You may also wish to take a look at my updated post re my success with backing up A's Organizer catalog before the drive became problematic.

Thanks for sharing your expertise.
