NEW LAP TOP

Postby Bubby Grub » Fri Nov 17, 2017 9:08 pm

Hi All,
My hubby may be in the market for a new laptop - just wondering if anyone could give their opinions on the following specs:
First of all we don't want to spend a fortune as basically he only uses the laptop if we are travelling and only then to check security
cameras - e-mails etc. Maybe occasionally he may want to use photoshop or a quick little video in PE. Otherwise when he is home
all major work is done on the PC. We found this one in Costco any thoughts great appreciated.
DELL INSPIRON
15.6 FULL HD
INTEL CORE I7 7700HQ 128GB SSD +1TB HD
NVIDIA GTX 1050TI 4GB GRAPHICS WIFI, BLUETOOTH
1 X HDMI 2.0 3 x USB 3.0 1X SD CARD SLOT - 16GB

This one fits the budget price wise but still don't want to get something that he would not be happy with, anything too slow
would drive him crazy he is not known to be very patient, and then that would put me in the firing line to LOL :)
Thanks for any advice
Bubby

The processor has a benchmark score of nearly 9,000 -- which that spec alone makes it heavy duty machine in my book!

It would certainly be a great machine for editing video and photos. Assuming the monitor has decent resolution.

Bubby,
I'm also in the market for a new laptop that has the capability to process 4K video with VEGAS PRO. What is the price of that laptop you found at Costco?

Thanks Steve you may have just made my mind up, I just wanted to be reassured about the processor.
Will do a little hunt around in case I can get it at a better price, but probably not.
To answer Mr Grunthunter the cost of the lap top is $1700.00 but that is at Costco in Queensland Australia.
Probably in the States the same laptop would be a lot better deal. Quite a few years back we did purchase a Sony
Laptop at Frys in California, can't remember what we paid for it at the time, but I do know even with the exchange rate
it was a lot better deal then what we could have got here.
Thanks again Steve for your input. Bubby

Personally, I'd recommend staying away from Sony computers. They're notorious for tweaking operating systems and drivers. Plus they can be a bit over-priced.

The HP Pro line is excellent and a great value. Dell and Asus are also very good. And refurbished machines are always a good investment!

The laptop Bubby is looking at is in the category of a gaming computer. That means its focus is on graphics performance. You could certainly use it for video editing, but in my not so humble opinion, you're paying for more graphics power than you need. Though if it's in your budget, that's not a crime.

But I'm not the guy to come to when it comes to laptops. I could never edit video on a 15" or even a 17" screen. So I defer to someone with more experience there.

Though if you're up for a laptop that's similar to Bubby's at 1/3 the price, check out this Black Friday deal.

Great find Steve. That does appear to be a GREAT deal. Curious, I noticed on the 'mouse' pad there are now specific right & left buttons to 'click' on. Do you just got to the general area of the pad and thump on it to select something? :-)

Correct on the touchpad. HP and others have been doing this for a while now on some models. I'm not a fan - would much rather have the buttons. Although having said this, I normally use a wireless mouse with a laptop anyway. A lot of laptop manufacturers are also eliminating the optical drive. I notice you didn't mention it having one. I've still got a lot of programs on disc and it would be a pain to not be able to pop a disc in. And I'm still old-fashioned enough to want the option to pop a DVD in, or burn to a CD or DVD directly without having to have an external.

I am a big fan of Lenovo Thinkpads, I've had 3 now and like them a lot. They are also not cheap but, depending on the model, have lots of power and great graphics. The Dell you posted is a really nice machine also :TU:
1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.
