I offered to put some Hi8 tapes onto DVD for a friend of mine, his family lost almost everything in the Gatlinburg, TN fires last year in the Smoky Mountains. He thought that he had lost the tapes as well but was able to recover them from his storage unit that was spared. So he has decided that he better do something with them before he does lose them... Anyway, I hooked up the old Pyro Link to my brand new computer, installed WinDV, and was off and running. I really couldn't believe how well everything worked right from the start, no problems what so ever I have captured two tapes without any problems, Pyro Link and WinDV both working perfectly on my Windows 10, 64bit machine. I couldn't be happier

Good to know Pyro Link escaped the obsolescence bin.

That's refreshing to hear! So many times I've pulled an electronic accessory out of a drawer, realized that I had bought it thinking it would come in handy, hardly used it, and now it's time to throw it away because it's obsolete.

Unfortunately (or for better or for worse) Pyro-style capture devices are pretty much non-existent these days. (So are FireWire connections.)
For capturing analog, there are $20 USB-based capture devices that do a pretty good job and save the video as editable MPEG or MP4. Considering the quality of VHS (which only had about 300 lines of data per frame) or even S-VHS (400 lines of data per frame -- compared to standard def's 525), that's likely good enough.
Though some days I do miss those simpler days when miniDV was cutting edge technology and FireWire was the ONLY way to capture quality video.

Good to know Chuck! The pyro won't work with Windows 7. Someday I will have to upgrade to 10

It is just a simple device, surprised there are issues with it in Windows 7. My system does have a Firewire connection, other than that it was a very simple plug and play operation.

I'm still at that point! As I only record in HD I haven't had much inclination to upgrade my camera to a 4k model. Likely I'll keep going with my Sony HVR-A1 until I have no more tapes left.
