Aug_2017 Solar Eclipse Info, esp for photographers

Talk about anything here.

Wouldn't you know? Leave a bunch of guys in a discussion about a Stellar Event and the topic turns to :occasion5: !

Chris, Way to GO!!!

On a more somber note, I came across an article about worse than worthless "Eclipse sunglasses," and thought I'd pass the info along:

https://www.upi.com/Top_News/US/2017/08 ... m_medium=4

Here's the link from the article about brands that ARE safe:

https://eclipse.aas.org/resources/solar-filters

I looked at the huge assortment available on Amazon and wondered how it could be possible that so many were so cheap when a solar filter for my camera wouldn't be!

We're going to be staying home after all. Since we have already witnessed a 97% eclipse and will be in the over 90% bracket this time, I've decided to bypass the traffic jams... they say MILLIONS of people will be going and local governments along the way are preparing as if a disaster were on the way.

Happy Beer, Happy Eclipsing, and Safe Viewing, everyone,

Paz

What did I do? - I never mentioned drinking anything. :-D

they say MILLIONS of people will be going and local governments along the way are preparing as if a disaster were on the way.

The last thing you want do is be stuck in a traffic jam out of the line of totality. We're trying to judge when to leave the hotel as we need to travel on the day - I spoke to one lady who is opening her site from 3 a.m. - but when I asked she'd "has only had about 6 calls" :conf:

I also really wish people (not here I would add) would stop using the "once in a lifetime" phrase. The next total eclipse is in 2019 - and the next total eclipse visible in the US will be April 2024. And - yes - the paths of both do cross so Carbondale in Illinois gets two total eclipses in 7 years.

Did a little research and discovered that a #14 pair of welding goggles is good enough to view the event. I might head over the the local home improvement store and see if the have a pair in stock. I am going to bring my camera to see if I can be able to modify the goggles and record the event.

Well you all better get a move on and try to observe this one. In 600 million years no human on earth will be able to see a total eclipse as the moon is moving away from us and will appear to small to cover the sun.

It's not a problem for me. I already have plans for that day anyway. ;)

Well if that day happens to coincide with The Beverly Hillbilly's vs MacGyver reunion special on TV, I am going to have to make some big decisions on what to watch that day.

Yebbut.... you could be looking for "Shadow Bands"! (Not everyone sees them.)

https://www.space.com/37776-shadow-band ... stery.html

Last thing you'd want would be being caught in a traffic jam on the way to a TOTAL eclipse of the sun...( or something like that.)

Nah. I have friends who spent many long hours caught in a traffic jam trying to get away from a hurricane. They had a good view from the windows of their car... except you can't see a bloomin' thing during a hurricane for the rain and wind blowing all those trees around. After that they decided they'd rather die at home. :fg:

Chris, Sherrin, and all MoviePixers who are able to see the "real" event, have a cold one and think of all of us! :TU:

Will be able to view the eclipse at 97% here (near Atlanta), that's good for me :)

Well almost as if reading from a script Mother Nature is up to her Wiley ways again....

The local weatherman predicts a beautiful sunny weekend. Nice temperatures and clear visibility...but Monday....... ohh yeah the clouds should be rolling in and high possibility for lots of cloud cover......

and now back the rest of your day.... lol

Beer and pie? Where is the party? My brother's photography club from Carbondale have been planning for this event. Can't wait to see their photos.

Just found out that we'll be directly in the path of totality for the 2024 eclipse that will cross the U.S. Maybe I'll be able to see it from my window at the nursing home. :-D
