http://www.cbsnews.com/news/solar-eclip ... l-eclipse/You may not be in the path of totality, but if you are in the USA, Mexico or Canada, you have an excellent chance of having a view of a partial solar eclipse. All depends on the weather! Solar safe filters are required and they are NOT the same as neutral density filters. Eyesight and camera innards are too precious to take chances. The article linked above has a map that shows percentages of totality and information on how to view, film and photograph safely. Happy Watching!

I am expecting to be on the line of totality (very excited). Regarding taking pictures of the eclipse the moon is (obviously when you think about it) the same size as the sun in the sky so you can practice when it's Full on the 7th of August. Given that this is actually quite small in the sky unless you have a reasonably long lens it is sometimes more interesting to take pictures of the effects eclipses have around the place. For example the crescent shaped shadows, people viewing etc. Good luck!

In Atlanta we are close to the path, just north of us. If I was really into this it would be a short drive to Nashville to see the whole thing.

Things are getting crazy in the St L area & So. IL such as Carbondale. People are renting out spare bedrooms and even couch space. The online room booking, such as Air BnB, people are renting out a bedroom for $700 a night. A house rental in Carbondale, IL is going for $4,000 a night. Some schools in the area are closing because it would be about the time the school gets out and don't want the responsibility of kids' eyesight. You should keep your pets indoors too. Their eyesight can be damaged.

But going suddenly too dark to read at 11am feels very wrong. Even an overcast sky on the line of totality is an unsettling experience. If I was really into this it would be a short drive to Nashville to see the whole thing.
This will be my third eclipse - and I'm travelling 4600 miles to see it. If it's just up the road I think you'd be mad to miss it - this is truly one of the most spectacular natural phenomena there is.

I never thought of that. It would be even that much darker! But a terrible disappointment if you had gone out of your way to actually see it.

A pretty excellent view of a partial eclipse - but it's really not the same thing. Anyhow we're staying in South West Wyoming - which appears to largely be the middle of nowhere!

Mind cold beer? Is that some kind of trick question?

Well Guys, when I worked in London several years back, I used to say that England was the only country in the World where you could buy a hot beer and a cold pie. Since then I have taken my wife over there a couple of times, and she could not get over the fact that when she went to the bar of our hotel to order a bottle of Club Soda to have with a Scotch, it was warm. Then when she asked for ice they looked at her as if she had gone mad! Just my 2 bob's (cents) worth.
If you are faced with a forced landing at night, switch on the landing lights, if you don't like what you see, switch them back off.

Beer in the UK is served a bit warmer than here. One thing I hear the most about from visitors is how they wish the beer wasn't served so cold. Beer here is served at around 33 - 40 degrees Fahrenheit while beer in the UK is served around 55 degrees. For most people in the USA that would be warm beer

This has a lot to do with the kind of beer that is most popular, in the UK it is an Ale or Stout, while here it is lite lagers, pale lagers and Pilsner. The dark lagers and ales are generally served warmer for a reason. https://www.homebrewersassociation.org/ ... peratures/

Yes, English (or British) beer is served at "cellar temperature" which is genarally around that 55F mark.
Other 'long drinks' (lager, Guinness, cider...) are generally served chilled.
