Until about a year ago, I had a recurring nightmare that involved being surrounded by multiple high-rise parking structures on a very hot day. I was unable to find my parked care. As I traipsed up and down the stairwells of each structure without success, I was drenched with perspiration.
Eventually, I would wake up, realize it was only a dream and go back to sleep without incident.
Then, about a year ago, it actually happened: I attended a conference at a hotel in downtown LA that had stairwells on all four sides, one of which was leading up from the street where I’d parked.
As I exited the conference, I realized that I did not recall which stairwell to take, despite the fact that I had a made a point of looking for landmarks at the top when I ascended them.
“Damn!” I said to myself. My nightmare is finally coming true. I wonder if I will be here until daylight, six hours from now, looking for my vehicle, I said to myself.
I decided to go back to the conference room to see whether my friend Mark, who had ascended the stairs with me, was still there. I doubted he was, as at least a half hour had passed since the conference ended.
However, as I approach the door of the room, I see Mark exiting.
“Mark, please tell me you recall which stairwell we used to get here.”
“Yeah, George, I remember. Follow me.”
Sure enough, there at the bottom of that stairwell was my vehicle.
And that was the last time I ever had the nightmare.
Are they any psychologists on the premises who can explain this phenomenon?
