Flickr's photo uploads stats

Postby sidd finch » Wed Dec 07, 2016 3:31 pm

As part of its annual Year in Review, Flickr takes a look at the cameras and camera types used to upload to its platform. For 2016, a whopping 48 percent of images and videos uploaded were captured with a smartphone, up from 39 percent a year ago. DSLR camera usage, meanwhile, dropped from 31 percent in 2015 to just 25 percent this year while point-and-shoot camera usage also slid, from 25 percent. The DSLR crowd was the hardest hit, as its representation tumbled from 31 percent in 2015 to 21 percent this year. Point-and-shoot use was down, too, to 21 percent from 25. About the only dedicated camera category left untouched was mirrorless, although its 3 percent is nothing to crow about. When it comes to whose devices are at the top, it's a familiar story. Of all photos with camera data attached, 47 percent were uploaded from Apple hardware -- 8 out of the top 10 devices were iPhones. Canon was a distant second at 24 percent, and it accounted for the two other devices in the top ranks (the EOS 5D Mark II and Mark III). Nikon was third at 18 percent,

Interesting.

Though I still say that no smartphone can completely replace a camcorder or DSLR.

Why can't a DSLR be a smartphone?
Actually, I'm waiting for an awesome smartphone with built in telescopic lens (optical zoom x35), shake reduction, 25MB, RAW; 4K HD Video 120fps, etc. And I want it now, not when it's obsolete.

I've never uploaded anything to flickr. I'm not too keen on uploading pictures with people in them.

Interesting stats Sidd. One of our local pawn shops no longer carries cameras. No market for resale. There are only 2 local brick & mortar camera shops in the the STL metro area.

Here is a comparision between an iphone 7 and a RED camera.

My second biggest take away was "where the heck does that kid afford a 50k camera..." I am not doing something right.

I was most impressed with the fact that it was landscape and not portrait.

My first take away was ..... he has $50k for a state of the art camera....but not $10 for an iPhone mount... had to rely on duct tape.... :ha:

So I had a quick look at the Red Camera. There's some sample footage Red's website to see what all the fuss is about (http://www.red.com/sample-r3d-files). My PC comes nowhere near being able to play it but here's a single frame from an 8K capture (slight re-compressed from the original). Even as a still picture it's impressive - don't forget to view at 100%.
