That is a big Hard Drive

Postby sidd finch » Thu Oct 13, 2016 2:11 pm

Hard drives might take a back seat to SSD's when it comes to sex appeal, but when it comes to space on the cheap, Seagate’s BarraCuda line will turn heads. Seagate on Tuesday announced two new BarraCuda drives—one of which now holds the record for being the largest-capacity 2.5-inch drive. The BarraCuda ST5000 pushes the capacity limit from the previous 4TB to 5TB, and will be priced around $85. Seagate says the drive uses the company’s 1TB-per-platter design that it unveiled at CES in January 2016. The same drive is also available in 4TB and 3TB models. All are 5,400rpm drives with 128MB of cache and a two-year warranty. Power consumption is rated at 2.1 watts under load and 1.1 watts

That's a lot of data to lose in the event of a failure. :-8

True but at $85 dollars it might make sense to have a couple so you have a backup of a backup.

Yes, but it might take a couple of days to restore the data. ;)

I have a Seagate 7 (seven) TB Backup external USB 3.0 drive with backups of backups. Bought that off Amazon, but it wasn't cheap. I've had it several months now. I think I might need another one soon.

I will not get a drive larger than 2TB right now. I would rather have 10 drives and lose one than have 2 huge drives and lose 1. I have backups of backups all on drives of 1 and 2 TB :)
1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.

That's not a lot of data

That's a lot of data

About 715 Mini DV Tapes or 15,625 CDs or nearly 7 million 3.5" Floppy disks.

Seagate's 60TB Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) SSD on the other hand opts for the familiar HDD 3.5-inch form factor. The company says that its drive has "twice the density and four times the capacity" of Samsung's PM1633a, and is capable of holding up to 400 million photos or 12,000 movies.

Hmm - Hope my maths is right - So if you have 10 1TB drives or 2 5TB drives and the MTBF on both is the same (drive I quoted above is 1 million hours). That MTBF translates to an AFR (annualised failure rate) of 0.87% per year. (http://www.zdnet.com/article/mtbf-afr-and-you/)

Therefore in one year you have a 1.74% chance of one of the 5TB drives failing and about an 8.7% chance of one of the 1TB drives failing.
In three years you have about a 5.2% chance of one of your 5TB drives failing - or 26% (one in four) of one of your 1TB drives failing.

You may loose less data - but it is 5 times more likely to happen.

With the Seagate 7 TB USB3.0 drive, if the drive fails during the first year, Seagate will recover the data from the drive. That insurance cost me about $10.00.
