PC Upgrade (from Laptop RIP)

Postby John 'twosheds' McDonald » Tue Aug 09, 2016 10:52 pm

Rather than continue with the hijack of Pazzaz's thread...

Well the parts finally arrived on Monday 7th August. They should have arrived on Friday 5th but due to 'courier problems' they languished in a distribution depot for the weekend. Which was rather inconvenient as I had been informed by email that they would arrive on the Friday so, in anticipation, I had stripped out the old Q6600 and mobo. Result - no PC over the weekend.

So now I have an ASUS Z170-P mobo, i7 6700k CPU, 16GB RAM and an Arctic Cooler i30. Sadly it wasn't a straightforward 'heart transplant' as, for reasons that I really cannot fathom, a complete Windows re-install became necessary. That has been quite a disappointment in one regard as there is a lot of work involved in re-installing all of that software but, thinking positive at least the fresh install will tidy up a lot of the junk that Windows accumulates over time.

Now to the acid test - how did the results compare?

The original config was a Q6600 CPU, ASUS P5N32E mobo, 8GB RAM . Rendering a thirty minute clip took all four cores of the Q6600 to 100% and resulted in a total elapsed render time of eighteen minutes and thirty one seconds.

Exactly the same clip but post 'heart transplant' using the i7 6700k, ASUS Z170-P with 16GB RAM resulted in all four cores running at between 85 - 95% and resulted in an elapsed render time of three minutes and thirty seconds.

Not bad eh?

Now to replace that graphics card and monitor. Suggestions anyone?
AMD Ryzen 3900x 12C/24T, ASUS x570 mobo, Arctic Liquid Freezer ll 280, Win11 64 bit, 64GB RAM, Radeon RX 570 graphics, Samsung 500GB NVMe 980 PRO (C:), Samsung 970 Evo SSD (D:), Dell U2717D Monitor, Synology DS412+ 8TB NAS, Adobe CS6.

Presume that's 8 cores... i7 has Hyper-threading and video rendering will make use of that.

Graphics card. Radeon RX 480 (which I have my eye on) or Nvidia GTX 1060 are the new midrange - if you can find stock. Probably best to give it a couple of months for pricing to settle down. Which is faster will depend on exactly which software you are using. Having said that the aggressive pricing of the RX 480 has lead to the 970 (and even 980) dropping in price significantly. The 970 has more CUDA cores than the 1060 and being slightly older may be better supported.

Monitor - I got one of these https://pcmonitors.info/reviews/aoc-q2577pwq/ - and it's gorgeous.
Intel Core i7 8700 - 32GB DDR4 - 500GB Evo 970 SSD - 3+2 TB HDD - GTX 1080- MSI Z370 Pro - Win10 64 bit - Cannon HV30 (PAL) - Sony A6000 - GoPro 3 Black

The i7 6700k CPU has 4 cores not 8. It does support hyperthreading though.

Since you are using CS6 which uses CUDA, I'd recommend sticking with NVIDIA. AMD does not provide CUDA. NVIDIA has generally outperformed similar AMD cards as well. You'll need to use the tweak to add the card to the supported card list to use gpu accelleration.

Sounds like a great system John :TU:

I have been very happy with the following graphics card and highly recommend this one or something similar. There are 8GB graphics cards out there but they are quite expensive, this is a good compromise I think.

What size monitor are you looking for?
1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.

Thanks for the pointer on the graphics card. I will take a look at that.

Monitor? I was thinking of 4K but I have cooled on that idea.

I think 1920x1080 or maybe 2560 x 1440. Let's face it, one of my 19" Samsung 1280 x 1024 died on me and the one remaining is now very venerable indeed! So absolutely anything will be a definite improvement on what I have.

I just purchased this one a few weeks ago for my daughter. She does a lot of digital art and animation work, she loves it. Compared to what she had previously I can understand why. It is a good monitor at a price that won't break the bank.

Some of you may recall that I use Macrium Reflect as my backup software. You may also recall that I have oft praised their tech support which I have had recourse to use periodically over the years that I have been using their software.

So what I really couldn't fathom is why it was proving so difficult to restore my backed up opsys to the 'heart transplanted' PC. After all, I had only changed the mobo/CPU/RAM. Everything else was the same.

Well, after two days of very regular email exchanges, where I was constantly provided with hand-holding guidance, Macrium's support made the restore successful. No clean install required. Everything running perfectly.

If you are looking for a backup software provider look no further! I really cannot recommend them strongly enough. (Yours sincerely, a very satisfied user. :hyst: )

Can't get a better recommendation than that! Glad you got it worked out, John.
