Holy Toledo!

Went to charge my Canon camcorder and got nothing. Checked the AC cord going into the adapter - it was okay. Checked the DC out - nothing. Rats. Okay, we'll just go to the Canon website and order one of those guys. $125!!! You've got to be kidding me. Ended up finding it at B&H for $110 with free expedited shipping. Ouch. I like my Canon, but I feel like I just got it and didn't even get kissed.
Could have bought a third party replacement but not going to take that chance with my camcorder.

I agree.

I bought a third party charger for a Dell laptop for $20.00 a while back because the OEM was $129.00. It would operate the laptop, but wouldn't charge the battery.
I used a Dell charger from another Dell laptop and it did charge the battery.

I've never had a problem with any third-party adapter I've ordered from Amazon -- and I've ordered them for hard drives, laptops and camcorders. Maybe I'm living high-risk, but I couldn't live with myself if I spent over $100 for an adapter when a $20 off-brand was available. But of course I tend to spend under $300 for my camcorders too...

I hear you, Steve, and I understand. I've only bought two camcorders in my life and I paid considerably more than $300 for my Canon. I couldn't live with myself if I bought a cheap adapter than burned up my camcorder. The one instance that comes to mind for me is when I purchased a cheap AC adapter for my ASUS laptop and it got so hot that it actually smelled like it was going to burst into flames at any moment. The ASUS brand didn't get more than warm. Maybe I just have bad luck.

Holy Toledo!

I honestly don't remember. It's been a lot of years ago. However, I suspect that it was from one of the many Internet-based suppliers of those kinds of computer accessories. I'm wary of them now. I do buy some things on eBay but I don't think that was one of them. Always had pretty good luck with my eBay purchases. Been pretty lucky that way. Why do you ask?

Mr. Mom bought a third party charger for his laptop and wouldn't stay connected to charge.

I find that the majority of aftermarket electronics on eBay are not UL approved, but many of the Amazon products are.

Another thing with eBay is that even if you're inclined to order from aftermarket parts/accessory suppliers, a great percentage of them are based in China or Hong Kong and they ship from there. The price is right, but standard shipping can take weeks. Last fall I needed a heat sink fan for a client for an off-brand computer. The only place I could find it was on eBay. It was to come from Hong Kong and standard shipping was 4 weeks. Express shipping was an additional $50, on a $22 fan! She decided that rather than be without her computer for a month she would pay the extra. It still took a week and a half.

I am more of a fan of Amazon. You seem to have better recourse with Amazon if something goes wrong.

Amazon has a dedicated truck that just runs back and forth to my house. :)
