Amazon & UK considering drones

Re: Amazon & UK considering dronesI wonder what percentage of UPS and Fedex business is directly related to Amazon deliveries. Probably UPS more than Fedex - I don't remember the last time that Amazon used Fedex for one of my deliveries. I'm sure that it's significant enough that if drone delivery really takes off (no pun intended) it could put a serious dent in traditional delivery methods. Even the USPS is getting a pretty hefty share of that business lately. Not likely to put anyone out of business, but it could mean a gradual reduction in workforce. I'm still not keen on the idea of a drone dropping off my package out on the front sidewalk. At least the UPS guy/gal can tuck it back in the corner of the porch behind the wife's decorative stuff.

This article mentions the drone landing on a special mat that you have to put out, so you can have it land in your fenced in back yard: http://www.bbc.com/news/business-36887325
Re: Amazon & UK considering dronesDon't have a fenced in yard. But we do have a flat sunroom roof. Hmmmm.....

Re: Amazon & UK considering dronesThat brings up a good point. What is considered your air space above your house. And if the drones have camera what kind of privacy can a non-user of the service reasonably expect. Will google have an air map version??
How will they stop theft or jamming the device to make it crash? No I am not paranoid but I think the mitigation of these issues would be interesting. Sidd "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." ..... Ferris Bueller

One of those articles says that the Amazon drones would be fitted with sensors only, no cameras.
Re: Amazon & UK considering dronesIt's never going to happen.

Re: Amazon & UK considering dronesMy favourites - Guess who! "640k ought to be enough for everyone." There is some doubt as to whether he actually said this, though.
