Windows Upgrade on SSD

Postby Chuck Engels » Thu Jun 30, 2016 2:48 pm

Here is a question for the wizards of Muvipix :)

I purchased a used lenovo laptop for my daughter. It has Windows 7 pro installed on a 60gb SSD. The laptop also has a 500gb hard drive. When trying to upgrade to Windows 10 we received an error saying that there wasn't enough disk space. Given the option to clean some of the data from the drive we cleaned everything possible and still get the low space error.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to how we should go about the upgrade or should we just leave it with Windows 7 ?

How much fee space is there on the SSD?
What programs are installed?

It is a 50GB SSD, not 60. Only Windows is installed and all temp files removed but there is still not 20GB free which is required for Windows 10 install.

I saw the link you posted earlier, thought I would post here to see what others had to say before trying anything. I'm a pretty smart guy and know that the Muvipix citizens know a lot more than most people :)

Hi Chuck,

50GB is pretty small these days. Prices on SSDs have come down a lot, you might consider getting a larger SSD and clone the existing drive over to it. You shouldn't have any problems upgrading in place then.

If you don't want to do that, you may need to do a clean install instead of an upgrade in place. Download the Microsoft Media Creation Tool and select the option to "Create installation media for another PC" to create a bootable installer on a USB Flash drive or DVD. Once you have the bootable media, you can use it to format the drive and do a clean install of Windows 10. You will need the activation key for Windows 7 in order to get the free upgrade. If you don't have the key, see this. A clean install won't be able to revert back to Windows 7 though. Some sites say to not enter the key when prompted during the install, but to wait until the install is complete and then enter the key. I'm not sure why it would make a difference.

The bootable media can also be used to perform an upgrade in place instead of a clean install. Slightly less free space will be needed that way compared to the direct download method, but you may still not have enough space.

I think that bob has the best suggestion here. You can probably get away with 50GB for a clean install - but as and when Windows upgrades itself (anniversary update due on 2nd August - for example) you might again get problems. Also Windows gains data as it gets old making it bigger. Also if you are that tight on space you won't be abke to install the most used programs on the SSD losing the speed advantage it gives. What's the laptop make/model?

Chuck when I installed my SSD I just moved everything over to an external drive (usb 3.0). Then what was left I cloned to the new SSD. You can then upgrade from there and just move back the file you would like on the new SSD.

Awesome suggestions everyone, thank you :exc:

I am going to look at purchasing a new SSD and clone the existing drive. I have noticed that Windows is installed on the SSD and on the 500 GB drive as well. Haven't had the time to look at it really close yet but curious as to why that is.

Until then I like John's idea of sticking with Windows 7 :)

Thanks again for the help, this is the best place in the world to get answers to any of life's questions, anything at all. I don't know what the world would do without Muvipix :-k

Wow, I had not realized the prices had gone down so much. 500gb SSD for under $155, that's amazing.

What will you be using for your cloning software, Chuck?

I have EaseUS Todo Backup Workstation, the paid version. Also have used their free version for years.

Thanks Chuck. What is it that makes you prefer it to other cloning software such as Acronis?

I had used Acronis before EaseUs and had some kind of problem, can't even remember what the problem was anymore. Been using EaseUs since and have been very satisfied with the product and the results. I clone and swap hard drives on a regular basis and have never had a problem, ever.

Dave, another contender for cloning is Macrium Reflect. It also serves as a backup/restore tool.

I have been using it for years, it isn't expensive and I can vouch for the fact that their support is second to none.
