Re: Canon-new sensor resolves text side of plane 11 miles aIt wasn't that long ago that 5 megapixels was considered a large number. 250MP is a monster by comparison.
They left out an important detail in that article: The camera's lens. Focal length is one factor they left out. I doubt that they were able to resolve the writing on the side of that plane using a wide angle lens. They also didn't mention that even for today's technology, cameras using sensors around the size of the APS-C, the one used in DX sized DSLRs, are already diffraction limited by the lens. Increasing the number of pixels isn't going to increase the resolution, but it can reduce artifacts such as color moiré and aliasing. I think the key takeaway is that this new sensor is targeted at "specialized surveillance and crime prevention tools, ultra-high resolution measuring instruments and other industrial equipment." Not general photography.
