I have what I think is a simple photo editing question I hope you can help with.
Let's pretend I have a JPEG image, white background with a pink circle in the middle of the image. What I want to do is get rid of the white background so that the only thing that appears is the pink circle. How do I do this?
I've tried (1) selecting the pink circle, (2) inverting the selection, (3) press "Delete". When I do this I see transparency where the white used to be, so I save the file as a JPEG. When I open that file I still see the white background. I want the white background gone.
How do I do this?

Hi Ron, JPEG files can not hold the transparency, only GIF, PNG, PSD and a few others have that capability http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transparency_%28graphic%29

I usually keep my master as a PSD file. Premiere Elements and Premiere Pro both support PSD and I can use them as is. If I'm going to be using it on a web page, giving it to someone else, or need to use it in a program that doesn't support PSD, I'll additionally save it as a PNG>

I'm now with PS, Illustrator and Premier, so I'm getting into a different ballgame. However, in XaraX10 there's a feature that will allow, with a few strokes, you to erase any part of a JPEG you want. Even though I will be getting heavier into Adobe I will probably always utilize XaraX, and keep it current. It makes a nice looking Website (the easy way), does simple photo editing and animation as well as vector drawing.
