Great idea for archiving projects

Postby Ron Hunter » Sat Feb 14, 2015 9:08 pm

Just found this tutorial from Caleb Pike (DSLR Video Shooter) that describes an inexpensive way to backup your projects. I currently have my old stuff on Blu-ray discs, but this looks like a better idea.

That's seems like a good idea. But that special adapter is only good for Seagate drives.

Although Seagate branded I believe that the adaptor is generic having just power and SATA connectors and therefore compatible with all HDDs.

If I recall correctly Chuck has used a similar setup for some time now (?).

Recent articles in the computer press suggest that HDDs as we know them will likely be superseded in a couple of years time by high capacity and cheap (compared to today's prices) SSDs.

Although Chuck, I believe, has an actual SATA docking station.

I don't know why anyone would use this jerry-rigged setup when you can buy an actual SATA hard drive docking station designed specifically for this purpose at the same or cheaper price.

I bought one of these 3 years ago at about half the price and it's served me well. It works with both 2.5" and 3.5" drives.

There are quite a few variations on this, including units for two hard drives at once.

Ron I really like the idea of archiving hard drives. My worry is in exposing the bare with no protection.

I found the USB 2.0 external cases for about $20 each

I just use external drives for archiving. Multiple instances of: a current drive and the oldest drive at home and a copy of the current drive at work for an off site backup.
I use a docking station for cloning.
