Recommendation for Blu-Ray software

Postby Ron Hunter » Mon Dec 02, 2013 7:19 pm

I have a Blu-Ray burner on my machine but for some reason I can't play a BR disc on it. I have tried both "home burned" and "store bought" BR discs, and they just won't play on my PC. They will play in a standalone BR player though.

I have searched Device Manager for info on my burner, but I can't find much about it. Same goes for the PC mfg website.

What software do you use to play BR discs on your computer?

Laptop: MacBook Pro (retina), 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5.
Cameras (in use): Panasonic GH4/Canon HFR400/Canon HV30, GoPro HD Hero2.

I don't think Splash Lite will play Blue Ray files. And I don't know any other free Blue Ray players except maybe VLC.

I use VLC. Works well. If you want full screen without borders, first select full screen (F11) then minimal interface (ctrl h).

Thanks! I'm not familiar with VLC Player. Is that the free download from the "VideoLAN Organization" website?

Yes, just click on Bob's link above. Be warned that store bought Blue rays may not play on VLC due to copy protected disks.

Let us know how it goes. Especially with store bought blue rays. But if you have a blue ray player didn't it come with software to play blue rays?

You would have thought so, but I can't find it. I can burn BluRay discs with no problem, but I can't (yet) watch them on the PC. I'll let you know how VLC works.

Sure enough, VLC doesn't like the menus on the Blu-Ray I burned with PRE10. I'll try a store-bought BR disc next.

VLC is supposed to get full Blu-Ray menu support in a future release. No idea when. You likely aren't going to get commercial Blu-Ray discs to play. Pretty much all are DRM protected. VLC does not include the pieces to circumvent DRM and decrypt the disc. There are instructions on the Internet for how to download and install the modules to do that, but bypassing DRM is , of course, illegal. And, playing newer Blu-ray discs may result in the keys in those hacks being revoked. There are also programs being sold that run in the background and bypass DRM. But, those cost as much as a commercial program that's licensed to play Blu-ray discs. You might as well go legit and get the commercial programs.

The two best software Blu-Ray players on Windows I know of are "TotalMedia Theatre" and "Power DVD". Both have free trials. I'm not familiar with software for the Mac.
