Well I'm very happy with my Gateway gaming laptop that I purchased in 2009. It will handle video editing with AVCHD using Vegas Movie Studio 12 just fine. It has become my desktop replacement computer so I use it for Quickbooks, Excel, Word and many other programs.

I always knew laptops were built for portability rather than speed -- but I wasn't aware there was that much of a difference with identical processors!

Does anyone have any idea why this is? The hardware doesn't care whether it's in a small box or a large box, right? Why are the difference between benchmarks so extreme?

The processors aren't identical. Processors designed for mobile use run at a lower clock speed and have a smaller on-chip cache to reduce power consumption. Both factors reduce performance.

It's also a cooling problem. Lower clock speed means it will run cooler.

Speed requires power, not only in the cpu, but also in the motherboard design. If the compact mobos in laptops worked as fast and as well as desktop ones do then we would see small compact mobos in desktop machines too. A laptop is set up to conserve energy for battery life anywhere it can, so performance suffers. I have a Core i7 920m which is not the same as a core i7 920. I have a desktop core i7 860 which is much faster than the laptop.

Wow, Paz. You're definitely having keyboard problems there :-D but I got the drift of what you were writing, all except the very last bit. :(

For desktop specs my preference would be for a Z77 motherboard, i7 3770/3770K processor and at least 8GB RAM. Opsys Win 7 Pro 64 bit.
