Portable video platform

Postby sidd finch » Thu Sep 20, 2012 11:57 am

I am looking for a platform to use to stand on to videotape a soccer match. Because it is on grass I am looking for some kind of platform to stand on that would not sink into the grass (e.g. a ladder) do you know if there is any kind of light weight portable platform that is made for these kind of events. And something that will not break the bank. Currently I stand on the sidelines with my camera and a monopod but I would like to get a bit higher off the ground.

Any ideas are appreciated

Sidd

A ladder on a piece of plywood?
Or you could build a platform and add large lawnmower wheels to be used as you would a hand truck.

Not sure a ladder is safe on the sidelines of a soccer field. You could get hurt and/or the players could get hurt. If you insist in using a ladder or something else then get some good insurance to cover the lawsuits if someone runs into your gear.

What about a strong plastic crate (storage crate if it is not too big) with a wooden platform over the open top, maybe attached with nylon ties so it doesn't slip and slide. It could also be used for carrying equipment to/from the games.

No, I repeat, don't use any kind of structure at the sidelines of a game. Please re-read my previous post again. Have you ever seen a photographer standing on a ladder or box at the sidelines of a soccer or football game? Only the stupid would do that. I'm not trying to be snippy, just trying to protect you.

Hi Sidd,
I don't think the officials will allow a structure or platform, portable or otherwise, on the sidelines.
Before you put anything together, or make any purchases, please be sure to ask if that would be allowed.
As TreeTops mentions it would be dangerous for not only you but the players as well.

Want a cheap 10 foot monopod? PVC pipe. I use 3/4" pipe which is pretty stable. You could get larger diameter pipe also. A pvc end cap with a 1/4" hole drilled through the top of it for a 1/4" threaded bolt to bolt to the bottom of the camera and you've got a 10' high perspective. Granted it's not as stable but you could attach short pieces at 90 degrees in the middle to hold it more stable. And you could always cut the pipe shorter to get a custom size.

Great call outs. Never thought about the saftey and or the requirements. Sounds like a big piece of PVC is the way to go.

Thank you

2- training wheels with rubber grooved tires
1- dumbell handle with screw collars

Yes, I should have thought of that. #-o I'm used to videoing indoor swim meets where we are not in the way of the athletes or officials.
